I wasn’t going to do a post about my thoughts on Adam’s new LP theme. Honestly, what’s been pothering me enough that I decided to say something here it isn’t that they’re trying a very different style, a style which may not work for him in any way. I can understand why they might want to make a change, since clearly something has to (although really lbr the 3A is the major issue.
No, my problem is really with the actual things that were said in the icenetwork article. It wasn’t just saying that they thought a style change was needed, it was saying that Adam’s skating isn’t “masculine enough” (those are scare quotes, this isn’t a direct quote) and that is a BAD THING. They mentioned work on the technical stuff, but I got a lot of “he needs to butch up, that’s the problem” vibes. And that pisses me the hell off. I’m too sleepy for a rant about all of the things wrong with it, and also this isn’t the place, so instead watch this and think about all of the bullshit with men’s figure skating and gender expectations and performativity. (I’m sure it’s an issue in ladies’ skating too, because there is an expectation of femininity, but this rant is re: the article on Adam’s new LP.)
If you’re masculine and male, cool. If you’re feminine and female, cool. If you’re male and feminine, female and masculine, and any combination and/or lack of the above categories, cool. The problem is trying to force people to be certain ways because of what society expects and values. And sure, you could argue that they’re just playing to society. But doing it because of society when it isn’t really reflective of you is being complicit. What’s worse is people who try to force others into roles that fit what society expects.
I don’t think Adam is the kind of skater to argue with his choreographer and coaches, especially if he’s in a place of frustration with how things are going. But someone decided that he is too feminine and is telling him “you need to conform to this masculine ideal to succeed.” And that’s what my issue is with it.

I’m actually watching season three of Veronica Mars now.
RACHELLE LEFEVRE AND RIDER STRONG ARE BOTH IN THE SECOND EPISODE, and there is a Stanford Prison Experiment kind of thing going on.
I am pleased.

if a guy has a lot of bad shit happen to him and another guy comforts him, that’s all it is, right? that’s not love, right?
It has been years since I watched this show, save a season one episode at a friend’s house within the past year.
This photoset has made me realize that I am still not over the Beecher/Keller storyline.
(For the record, I do know that there is way more to Oz than B/K. And the other thing about this show that’s I’m not over is Alvarez.)
